Mission Statement

Jazz in the Mountains is organized to assist experienced adult instrumentalists in realizing rewarding musical growth in a socially-enjoyable atmosphere of common goals and shared experiences.
Every element of the jazz camp experience is considered with [as far as is reasonable] these goals in mind:
  • focus on the musical growth and jazz education of campers
  • educational-centered more than performance-centered priorities
  • make meaningful and deliberate choices about activities
  • create an individual musical growth plan for each camper [advice on how to continue your progress from where you are]
  • expect campers of similar & dissimilar abilities to work together and support each other
  • offer opportunities for improvisation and approaches to it
  • provide the structure for a positive social experience
  • staff the camp with individuals with musical, interpersonal, and educational strengths, and who respect life-long learning

Covid-19 Strategies

All attendees of the August 2021 Jazz in the Mountains camp must have received a Covid-19 vaccine, and have provided certification of such, before June 15, 2021. Any updates to these requirements will be published on the website as new therapies, advice, and regulations become available.

Program

Besides the afternoon clinics & sectionals, the evening performances and jam sessions, a primary focus - and one of the major activities of campers at JAZZ IN THE MOUNTAINS - will be membership in one of FOUR ensembles with rehearsals, practice, and preparation leading up to the Thursday Evening Performance.  Issues of ensemble sound, jazz interpretation, styles, improvisation, technique, personal sound, repertoire, and stage presence will be part of that preparation. Patience, cooperation, contributions to the community, and growth through constructive criticism will be hallmarks of a successful jazz experience.

The FOUR ensembles we expect to use as the structure for that experience will include:

Big Band – directed by Charlie Sarling
Big Band - directed by Rich Davidian
Nonet - directed by Ray Vega
Nonet - directed by Glendon Ingalls

If accepted, your placement in one of these ensembles will be decided based on the best potential balance of instrumentation for the ensemble and match with the director. If you have a preference, we will try to take that into consideration as well.
